VIRGINIA FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR 2009 FESTIVAL 22nd Annual Festival Set For November 5-8 in Charlottesville Filmmakers Invited To Submit Features and Documentaries On Subjects Surrounding But Not Limited To 2009 Theme of “Funny Business”

Charlottesville, VA – July 13, 2009 – The acclaimed Virginia Film Festival returns to Charlottesville from November 5-8 with a new theme, a new director and a brand new invitation for filmmakers to be part of the action.

New VFF Director Jody Kielbasa has announced that the Festival is reaching out to local, regional and national filmmakers with a special call for entries.  All feature and documentary submissions will be considered as long as they are received by August 25th.  All entries must be submitted through Withoutabox (www.withoutabox.com).  Rates for film submissions will be $45 for the general public, $40 for Withoutabox members, $10 for students and FREE for Virginia residents.

The 2009 Virginia Film Festival, hosted by the University of Virginia, will be built around the theme of “Funny Business.”  The theme, according to Festival organizers, will focus not only on comedy in the movies but also on the various forms of funny business that seem to be so prevalent these days in the worlds of government and finance.  While films surrounding this theme will be given special consideration, the Festival will consider the work of all interested filmmakers.

“Inclusivity is a big part of my vision and my mission for the Virginia Film Festival,” Kielbasa said.  “I am particularly interested in engaging the vibrant local film and arts communities, including those in the Charlottesville area and those affiliated with the University.  As we move forward, I always want to make sure that this Festival is a reflection of the extraordinary community which it represents, and this new feature will help us do that.”

The 2010 Wisconsin Film Festival is now open for film submissions.

Greetings! We’re getting the jump on festival submissions this year, opening them about two months earlier than usual. I will be updating various submissions listings on the Internet and elsewhere in the coming days with the details for 2010; most of what you need to know is listed here and on the actual submission form.

As always, feel free to call/email me directly if you have questions about the festival or the submissions process. This is an important part of how the Wisconsin Film Festival builds its annual program. Although many of the films we show are specifically curated from international film festivals, production companies, and other industry sources, the fresh films shared through the submissions process give this festival a more complex, unexpected appeal (e.g., festivals can all show the same “hit” films, but it’s how they choose film submissions that often expresses their character).

Some of the world-class filmmakers featured in 2009 are Agnès Varda, Jia Zhang-Ke, Ramin Bahrani, So Young Kim, Johnnie To, Ellen Kuras, Werner Herzog, Doris Dörrie, James Benning, Brillante Mendoza, Carlos Reygadas, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Doug Pray, Christian Petzold, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Pablo Trapero, Shane Meadows, Lee Chang-Dong, A.R. Murugadoss, Bill Plympton, Ken Jacobs, Majid Majidi, Molly Dineen, Fernando Eimbcke, and Terence Davies. The festival’s opening night film was 500 Days of Summer with director Marc Webb (a Madison native) and very delightful screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber in attendance, playing to a packed house of 1,200.

Fees range from US$10 to US$30, and there is a single deadline date for each of the three submission categories

Best of luck with your current and future film projects!

The Wisconsin Film Festival welcomes narrative, documentary, experimental, and animated films or videos of any length.

Although these guidelines refer a lot about Wisconsin filmmakers, the Festival is open to films from around the world. The largest number of films are submitted in the Open Reel category. There are three categories:

DOWNLOAD THE SUBMISSION FORM

This form is an editable PDF document. You can use Adobe Acrobat or Reader to complete the form, then print and send with your submission. (Get the free Reader software from Adobe’s site.)

Or, you may print the blank form and fill it in by hand. Please keep a copy of the form for your records.

What prizes can I win?

Because the festival circuit can be such an effective way to get your film some attention, a lot of emphasis can be put on how many prizes a festival offers, or whether there are cash awards for winners. We agree that this is exciting and rewarding in many ways (especially if you have production bills that still need to be paid).

Part of the success of the Wisconsin Film Festival, though, has been through supporting the notion that there is merit in all films in the program. Our goal is to expand people’s understanding and acceptance of what makes a good movie, not to narrow it by selecting the “best” ones. Over the years, many attendees have developed their appreciation for a much broader range of storytelling styles because they are encouraged to be adventurous. We think that’s ultimately good for filmmakers. Limiting the prizes to films winning an audience vote, and awards for Wisconsin films, means that we can balance the wish to support our local filmmakers while showing the respect and affection that we feel for every single film that in the final program. Maybe it’s easier for other festivals to pick favorites, but frankly here we love ’em all.

So, cash prizes are given to films in the Wisconsin’s Own and Wisconsin’s Own Student Shorts categories (in 2009, $250 for shorts and $500 for features), to help promote filmmaking in the state. And the audience votes for their favorite narrative and documentary feature films (an honor, we hope, but no cash award).

A few details

Your film must have been completed after January 1, 2008.

You can submit more than one film, as long as each work meets the other criteria.

Each film must have its own submission form, entry fee, and DVD/VHS tape, but can be mailed in the same envelope.

The Festival will not consider:

  1. Commercials or advertisements. Music videos. Instructional, industrial, medical, or institutional films. Video games. Stand-alone trailers. Films with prior substantial theatrical exhibition, commercial TV broadcast or webcast, or commercial video distribution in the Madison, Wisconsin market.Films submitted to the Wisconsin Film Festival in past years.Films completed before January 1, 2008.
  2. Work that will not be completed by February 15, 2010. The Festival does not include “works in progress” in its final program.

Feature films (60 min. or more): $30
Short films (less than 60 min.): $20
Student films (any length): $10 (with photocopy of valid student ID)
Fees can be paid with checks or money orders (payable to “Wisconsin Film Festival”) or with Visa or MasterCard.

[Student status is counted when your film was created. If you made your film when you were a student, and have now graduated, you may still submit that film as a student.]Everyone will be notified of their film’s status (accepted or not accepted into the Festival) no later than February 15, 2010. At that time we’ll also notify any Wisconsin filmmakers who are receiving awards for their work.

Feel free to call (877-963-3456 or 608-262-9009) or email if you have questions — we look forward to seeing your work.

The DC Shorts Film Festival!

The DC Shorts Film Festival (September 10-17, 2009) has selected films for this year's competition.  From more than 680 entries, the selection committee has accepted 100 different films, to be programmed in 10 different shows.  We have films from 16 nations -- a record for us.

Please visit our updated web site at dcshorts.com to see the schedule, read film summaries, and get more information on the event.  Next week, our interactive schedule will be launched -- plan your whole week with a few clicks!

Ticket sales will begin by mid-August - as a DCS subscriber, you will get advanced notice.

We need to house over 100 Filmmakers!

DC Shorts encourages filmmakers to come to Washington and attend the festival; this year, more than 165 filmmakers will attend - many of whom need a place to stay for a few days.  Filmmakers are scheduled throughout the day so they really only need a place to sleep and shower.  In the past, people who have housed filmmakers have found the experience to be simple, non-intrusive, and incredibly rewarding.

For your hospitality, you will receive:

    - 2 tickets to a screening of your choice and a party of your choice
    - Access to the Filmmaker Lounge in the theater
    - Free tickets to the Best Of Shows in February 2010

Last year, we successfully housed more than 68 filmmakers.

Please consider hosting a filmmaker for a few days.  And please forward this to your friends and colleagues who might be interested (or willing) to host a filmmaker.

To get more information, please email us today by clicking here.
